Law Enforcement Imposter Scams
Scammers call pretending to be deputies or police officers, claiming you missed jury duty or have a warrant and must pay immediately.
*Law enforcement will NEVER call to demand payment.
Fake Fine / Ticket Emails
Text and emails claiming you owe traffic fines or fees and must click a link to pay.
Phone Spoofing Scams
Scammers can make it look like they are calling from a real local number—even a bank or police department.
Card Skimming Devices
Devices placed on gas pumps or store terminals to steal card information have been reported in West Texas, including Abilene.
Phishing Targeting Local Businesses & Individuals
Fraudulent emails requesting payments or sensitive information are causing victims to lose thousands of dollars locally.
Common Fraud Schemes

Red Flags to Watch For
- Urgent threats or pressure to act immediately
- Requests for personal or account information
- Payment requests via gift cards, wire, or cryptocurrency
- Unexpected calls, texts, or emails
- Deals or prizes that seem too good to be true

How to Protect Yourself
- Do not click suspicious links or attachments
- Verify requests by contacting the organization directly
- Monitor your accounts regularly
- Use strong passwords and account alerts
- Inspect card readers before inserting your card
